Celebrate the 4th

The 4th of July has parades and cookouts and celebrations, as well it should. People dress up as Uncle Sam but how often do we talk about what happened that day in 1776. The day Americans changed the world forever!

Before the American revolution almost everyone in the world live in a place where they had a king or a ruler of some sort. No one lived in a place where the people elected their leaders. Today almost every person in the world lives in a country where they hold elections. Granted in some countries like Iran or China, the outcome of the elections is predetermined, but they at least pay lip service to the idea that Americans invented!

People should control their government and not the other way around.

It was an idea that would change the world. Even England, the freest country at the time of the revolution had a King.  Americans didn’t want to be freest — they wanted to be free. Here at People4Liberty we’ve been working to support that idea. We want everyone to understand what Thomas Jefferson read from Independence Hall in Philadelphia 246 years ago.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Take some time today and talk with the people you gather with about Liberty. Talk about what freedoms you have and what freedoms you wish you had. Ask your friends and family how much better they think it is in the United States, and how they would make it better still.

Because the critical idea that changed the world is that the country belongs to us, and not to Kings or Tyrants. It’s good for the owners to talk about how the country is running.
